Inspiration
In this project I was asked to create a sample book based
around a word that I would be given by my tutor. I was given the word bus; I had
a lot of mixed feelings about the word. I have created a mask for a masquerade ball,
getting to design a mask was challenging but I managed to find a way through it
and overcome the obstacle.
Evaluation
For this project I have created a mask, the mask can fit
many face sizes due to the ribbon fastening. I have created the mask by using a
template and paper machining over it. The mask took about 45 minutes to 1 hour
to dry, I have used black spray paint to give the mask colour. I have used
black as the colour for my mask to keep a slight link to the word bus. To decorate
the mask I have used diamantes to give a diamond effect and used and old necklace
to give the mask an edge.
My inspiration to create a mask came along when I was analysing
the word ‘bus’, I thought of traveling and have always wanted to travel to Venice,
I did research in to Venice and found that masks were very popular as Venice
holds a lot of carnivals, I did more research and discovered in the 16th
century masquerade balls were a regular event in Venice.
I found a lot of artist and mask makers in my project to do
with both masks and buses. Their work was very inspirational to my project, it
gave me a lot of ideas that helped me with creating my project. I also looked
at films and YouTube videos, when searching on YouTube I found a lot of people
showing others how to make masks, I found the interesting as I came across a
lot of different was and materials that can be used to create a mask.
I have done quite a few sample techniques in this project
such as:
·
Lino print
·
Wax and ink
·
Wax & tea bags
When I was designing the mask I used paper Mache,
when paper machining I found it very tricky as it was hard to keep neat and I ended
up with PVA all over the place. I had to make sure I was creating the shape
that I wanted and that the mask was thick.
I have created a photo shoot in this
project, I wanted my model to have an elegant by dark look and my model has
that look the elegance comes from her facial exasperation the darkness has come
from the colour and style of the make-up.
I am very pleased with my project; I think my
mask is a great shape and links to my project very well. The mask is exactly
like I imagined it would be, the only problems I had with the mask was waiting
for it to dry because it took so long if I am to create a mask again I will
make sure to put the mask to dry in a warmed environment. I am happy to of made
a mask as it have opened my garment range and can show in future that I can
make more than garments.
